Kuchlbauer – Dunkle Hefeweisse

Kuchlbauer brewery was founded in year 1300 in Abensberg, Germany.

Besides being a weissbier brewery, Kuchlbauer is very known for its art collection / decorated brewery and especially the Kuchlbauer Tower, an observation tower designed by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser on the grounds of the Kuchlbauer Brewery.  The tower stands 35.14 meter tall and the gold-plated observation ball at the top is 10-meter in diameter and weighs 12 metric ton. The tower was opened to visitors in January 2010.

Dark and deep brown with a orange bottom.

Semi big head with a fine top, brown coloured from the beer.

Dark fruit aroma with a light sweetness.

Good CO2, fresh despite the darkness, easy to drink. Burned caramel and fruit in the after taste. Not so much sweet fruit in the taste.

Hopf – Dunkle weisse

The weissbier brewery Miesbach was founded in 1892 and the Hopf family acquired it in 1921. The brewery was upgraded in 1950 and since 1975 to today, the production have risen from 3000 to 45000 hl. The brewery employs 23 people.

I bought this dunkel weissbier from a German webshop in Bayern as a part of a large lot, single price came down

Deep and brown colour, with so much sediment that is beyond just being described as unfiltered in its content.

Big head.

Light fruit aroma with a hint of dark malt.

Violent CO2 opens up for this sweet fruit taste, good balance with a dark, pleasant and soft wheat in the after
taste.

Schlossbrauerei Stein – Dunkel Weissbier

The first mentions of this brewery is the Stein Tavern from 1489. The castle was built in 1845 and most of the brewery and castle was destroyed during 2nd world war. The brwery is today ran as the same company that founded in 1938, Schlossbrauerei Stein Wiskott GmbH & Co.

Beautiful brown colour with red and orange play to it.

Medium sized head that has some colour from the dark beer, super fine foam on the top.

Light fruit aroma with a dominant wheat scent.

Good CO2 that balances well with the dark and sweet fruit, finishes in a pleasent fading after taste and has just a slight bitterness in the end. The beer being organic is a plus as always.

Wieninger Hefe Weissbier Dunkel

Old texts mention, that beer was brewed in the 1600’s by the father of, Tobias Schaidinger who in 1656 built a new brewery in Teisendorf, Germany. This brewery was bought by Philipp Wieninger in 1813. The brewery is today driven by Christian Wieninger who is the 8th generation of the brewing family.

I bought this dunkel weissbier on a 500 ml bottle at 5,2% from a German webshop located in Bayern. The price was 1,49 Euro.

A deep brown colour with a very dark orange tone in the bottom of the glass.

Grand big head with a rough structure, a very fine foam on the top.

The aroma comes off with a good sweet fruit with a medium strength.

When drinking the beer it immediately welcomes with a good CO2 content, delicious fruit with a weak wheat twist to it, but unfortunately it ends very fast and is too gentle in its taste expression.

Jacob – Dunkles Weissbier

In 1738, the workers of the smelting work in Bodenwöhr, Bayern, Germany requested permission from Karl Albrecht, Elector of Bavaria, to establish a brewhouse so that they would no longer need to import the brews of a somewhat inferior quality from nearby towns. The first master brewer, Peter Still from Fischbachbegan his work in 1758, so some twenty years later.

In 1759 Peter Still died and while it was a state owned it was decided to privatize the brewery, which happened in 1804. In 1884, Johann Baptist Jacob – the great-grandfather of present-day owner, Marcus Jacob – acquired the company.

Dark brown in colour, hazy and heavy like rye bread.

Small rough head that is gone in a second.

Delicious dark, burned dried fruits in the aroma.

Medium CO2, good play between fruit, darkness, sweetness and wheat. Ends in a after taste as sweet as candy.

Landgraf – Weizen Dunkel

There is not much to find out about this brewery, the brand itself might be from 1970. Landgraf title is a old term for Inns in Germany where you could eat, sleep and drink. It is produced for the beer retailer Hausler Getränkemarkt in Germany.

Brown to deep orange in the colour.

Large head with a fine top.

Weak fruit and caramel in the aroma.

Low CO2, dark caramel, notes of liquorice and a little too light in the fruit taste.

Franziskaner – Dunkel Weissbier

The Franziskaner brewery can be dated back to 1363 where it is described in texts as the brewery town at monastery near Munich, Germany. In 1841 a huge and completely  new brewery was build in Lilienberg, a town outside Munich. In 1922 the Spaten brewery fusioned with the Fraziskaner brewery and they became Spaten-Franziskaner-Leistbräu AG. In 2005 the brewery was bought by the large InBev cooperation.

Brown and unfiltered in the look.

Medium head with a fine top, quickly disappears.

Lovely sweet fruit aroma.

Good CO2, light sweetness and good fruit.

Maisel’s Weisse Dunkles Hefe-weissbier

The Maisel brewery was founded in 1887 by Hans und Eberhardt Maisel as a family business. The brewery is located in Bayreuth, Oberfranken, near Nürnberg in Germany. Today it is the fourth generation of the family, Jeff Maisel that runs the brewery.

I bought this beer at the Salling store in Aarhus, Denmark at the price of 3,5 Euro for a 500 ml bottle at 5,2%.

A deep brown colour.

Small head that disappears in a hurry.

Sweet fruit aroma, but a little too thin, watery and light.

Powerful CO2, sweet fruit, darkness and generally delicious composition, continues with the same flavors in the after taste.

Hornbeer – Dark Wheat

Hornbeer is a farmhouse brewery founded in 2008 of Gunhild and Jorgen Fogh Rasmussen. Jorgen has had brewery as a hobby for more than ten years. The first brewery was very small, only 300 liter batch. 30th July 2008, only 3 months after opening, the brewery burned down to the ground.

A building was changed from garage to brewery. New and second hand equipment from the whole world was collected. In January 2009 the new brewery was ready for the first brew. 6 years later, the production is around 2000 hl/year. You can find among 30 different beers from the brewery.

I bought this beer at the Salling store in Aarhus, Denmark at the price of 6 Euro for a 500 ml bottle at 5,2%.

Simply put, a black beer.

Small head that quickly disappears.

Darkness and wheaty fruit in the aroma.

Good CO2, darkness, caramel, sweet fruit, slightly spiced in the after taste. A extremely dark dunkel beer. Biodynamic / organic beer.

Weltenburger – Hefe-weissbier Dunkel

The Weltenburger monastary is founded around year 617 on the southern banks of the Danube river in Bayern, Germany. The brewery was built in 1050 which makes it the 2nd oldest brewery in the world. This day today there is 14 monks living at the Weltenburger monastary.

Deep brown colour with a thick and hazy look.

Medium sized head with a fine top.

Medium aroma with fresh darkness and sweet fruit.

Good CO2, good balance between the dark and the fruit. Long after taste with a sweet fruit.
