Hoegarden – Witbier

GS6A2761Wit beer can be tracked back to being brewed in the middleages in the village of Hoegaarden in Belgium. There have been many breweries, fires, closures etc and the the brand have been bought and sold numerous times between large breweries in new times. The man behind Celis White brewed in Texas, America was also the owner of Hoegaarden before he sold it and moved to America.

I bought this wit beer in a local supermarket in Odense, Denmark at the price of 5 Euro for a 750ml bottle at 4,9%.

Light yellow unfiltered colour.

Head comes off with big white foam of fine bubbles.

Aroma is powerful with a lovely fruit and some floral tones to it.

Balanced CO2, Good fruit and floral tones to the taste. After taste is sweet and lightens out a little watery.

Epic brewing company – Wit beer

GS6A2440Epic Brewing Company is located in Salt Lake City, Utah in America and was founded in 2010. All beers are hand crafted in small series and all bottles are numbered. So far 39 series of beer have been released.

I bought this beer in a local beer shop in Berlin, Germany at the price of 7,8 Euro for a 650ml bottle at 5,3%. There are only 1800 bottles of this beer and this was #18.

A beautiful unfiltered yellow colour.

Large head made of very fine bubbles and it stays with a good layer.

Aroma comes off with a lovely fruit, sweet and in balance.

Soft CO2 makes for a pleasant drink with a good fruit to it. Reminds me more of a weissbier than a wit. Still a good beer.

Schneider Weisse – Tap 7 – Unser original

Georg I Schneider was the creator of the Schneider Weisse Original recipe, which is still used today. Two-hundred years ago, wheat beer could only be brewed by the Bavarian royal family in their breweries. In 1872, King Ludwig II discontinued brewing wheat beer due to a steady decline in sales.

Georg I Schneider was sold the exclusive right to brew wheat beer. Today, Georg VI Schneider is running the brewery in Kelheim, which the family acquired in 1927 and has remained the Schneider Weisse brewery to this day. It is the oldest wheat beer brewery in Bavaria. Wheat beer has been brewed there without interruption since its founding in the year 1607.

I bought this weissbier in a local supermarket in Odense, Denmark at the price of 3,5 Euro for a 500ml bottle at 5,4%.

A lovely dark orange to light brown colour of unfiltered beer fills the glass.

Large white head that settles down to a thin layer.

Delicious sweet fruit in the aroma.

Good CO2 that feels bubbly, fresh fruit with a sweetness over it and a short after taste.

Schlenherla Rauchweizen

Schlenherla is located in Bamberg, Germany. The Schlenherla tavern is mentioned in scarce from 1405 to 1615. The building was destroyed in the 30 year war (1618-1648). The brewery with name as it is known today can be dated back to 1678. Through the years various owners was in possession of the brewery and today it is in the hands of the Graser family.

I bought this beer in a local beer shop in Berlin, Germany at the price of 2,75 Euro for a 500 ml bottle at 5,2%.

The colour is brown and it is unfiltered.

The head is relatively small and disappears fast.

The aroma comes off with the smoke and a hint of fruit.

The smoked malt really dominates the taste, smoke is dominating the fruit and the after taste is a gentle smoke too, the CO2 is good.

This beer really reminds me of sitting in a pub, having some beers and smoked sausages on the side, a real pleasant memory and this beer got me real hungry.

Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse

Hacker brewery was founded in 1417 in Munich, Germany. In 1793 Joseph Pschorr married into the brewery family. In 1813 they had the largest beer cellar in Germany, known as the Beer fortress.

I bought this beer in KaDeWe in Berlin, Germany at the price of 1,73 Euro for at 500 ml bottle at 5,5%.

A beautiful orange colour with a nice glow fills the glass.

A big and fine head with a yellow hint that stays for a long time.

The aroma comes off with a light fruit.

Lively CO2, lightly fruited, after taste is quickly over. Good to quenching your thirst, but too little taste in it.

Berliner Kindl Weisse

Berliner Kindl was founded in 1872 as a collaboration between bar owners in Berlin. The name that is known today was established in 1910. Today there is no brewery for just this beer as the brand is owned by the Dr. Oetker company and brewed on large breweries.

I bought this beer in KaDeWe in Berlin, Germany at the price of 0,77 Euro for a 330 ml bottle at 3%.

Light yellow colour with just a slight haze, not that unfiltered.

White fine head that disappears fast.

Fruit aroma that comes of with a hint of bitterness.

Citrus. It is fresh, bitter and comes off with a strong citrus in the start, CO2 is okay.

Hösl Whiskey-weisse

The privately owned brewery Hösl was founded in 1906 by Michael Hösl in Mitterteich, Bavaria, Germany. The brewery burned down in 1957 and was recently restored in 2006. The brewery is today run by second generation of the Hösl family.

I bought this beer in a local beer shop in Berlin, Germany at the price of 3 Euro for a 500 ml bottle at 5,6%.

A deep orange going over in brown colour with a nice glow in the bottom.

The head takes some colour from the beer and it disappears quickly into a thin layer.

A very sweet and fruity aroma with a certain freshness to it.

Low CO2, smoked, dark taste with a freshness from the hard to taste fruit. The after taste is dominated by the smoke by ends too soon.

Ayinger Braüweisse

Ayinger brewery is located in Aying in Bavaria, Germany. The brewery was founded in 1877.

I bought this beer in a local wine shop in Odense, Denmark at the price of 3,5 Euro for at 500 ml bottle at 5,1%.

A nice looking yellow unfiltered beer with a orange glow to it.

The head is white, big and with very fine bubbles.

The aroma comes off with a sweet fruit and hints of banana.

Lightly fruited taste with a medium CO2 and a good fruit fade.

Flying Dog – In-heat Wheat Hefeweizen

Flying Dog brewery was founded in 1990 by George Stranahan in Aspen, Colorado, USA. It started out as a BrewPub, late it became a fully-fledged Denver brewery. The artwork on the labels are done by Ralph Steadman, the same artist that illustrated various books by Hunter S. Thompson.

I bought this unfiltered beer in a local supermarket in Lillestrøm, Norway at the price of 3,5 Euro for a 355 ml bottle at 4,7%

A good yellow unfiltered look with a bit of orange glow to it.

Head is quickly gone and stays as a covering layer of fine bubbles.

Aroma is very faint with a hint of fruit.

The CO2 reacts fast when drinking it, a flat feeling with the very anonymous fruit that have some watery thinness over it, after taste is okay.

A orange coloured unfiltered beer, sediment can be present as large pieces floating around.

The head is big and have a yellow hint to it in the colour, the head stays.

The aroma have notes of the hops, bitter fruit and a fresh feeling to it.

Low CO2, sweet taste, bitter fruit, hides its very high alcohol percent really well, but it can be too much, the after taste lasts long.
