Hornbeer – Dark Wheat

GS6A8597

Hornbeer is a farmhouse brewery founded in 2008 of Gunhild and Jorgen Fogh Rasmussen. Jorgen has had brewery as a hobby for more than ten years. The first brewery was very small, only 300 liter batch. 30th July 2008, only 3 months after opening, the brewery burned down to the ground.

A building was changed from garage to brewery. New and second hand equipment from the whole world was collected. In January 2009 the new brewery was ready for the first brew. 6 years later, the production is around 2000 hl/year. You can find among 30 different beers from the brewery.

I bought this beer at the Salling store in Aarhus, Denmark at the price of 6 Euro for a 500 ml bottle at 5,2%.

Simply put, a black beer.

Small head that quickly disappears.

Darkness and wheaty fruit in the aroma.

Good CO2, darkness, caramel, sweet fruit, slightly spiced in the after taste. A extremely dark dunkel beer. Biodynamic / organic beer.

Overall rating 80 / 100

Kuchlbauer brewery was founded in year 1300 in Abensberg, Germany.

Besides being a weissbier brewery, Kuchlbauer is very known for its art collection / decorated brewery and especially the Kuchlbauer Tower, an observation tower designed by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser on the grounds of the Kuchlbauer Brewery.  The tower stands 35.14 meter tall and the gold-plated observation ball at the top is 10-meter in diameter and weighs 12 metric ton. The tower was opened to visitors in January 2010.

I bought this unfiltered weissbeer from a German webshop at the price of 1,49 Euro for a 500 ml bottle at 2,8%.

Brown to deep orange in the colour, nice and smooth hazy look.

Big head with a fine top.

Medium darkness and caramel in the aroma with a sweet fruit alongside.

Good CO2, dark and lightly fruited, a little too thin in the taste.

Indslev bryggeri – Sort hvede

GS6A8201

Indslev brewery was established in 1897 by Frederik Christian Rasmussen. At some point the brewery was closed down, but in 2005 restored to former glory with brand new production equipment. The re-opening was made possible by Anders Busse Rasmussen, grand grand nephew of Frederik Christian Rasmussen.

A medium head that is brown and it is gone in about 30 seconds.

Totally and completely black in the colour.

The aroma is dominated by dark caramel with hints of fruit and wheat.

Low CO2, it has a burned, dark and long lasting sweet, but flat, dark fruit in the taste. Simply too dark and thick.

Overall rating 72 /100

I bought this wheat beer in a local supermarket in Odense, Denmark at the price of 2,5 Euro for a 500 ml bottle at 5,8%.

Brown and amber in the colour, large pieces of sediment floats around this unfiltered beer.

Small head.

Heavy caramel and sweetness dominates the aroma.

Overall rating 60 / 100

König Ludwig Weissbier Dunkel

GS6A3296

The House of Wittelsbach began the first brewery in 1260. 32 years later, Herzog Rudolf built the castle Kaltenberg, which houses a part of the brewery’s facilities today. The brewery as it exists today was opened in 1870. Prince Luitpold of the House of Wittelsbach, is the great-grandson of the last King of Bavaria, Ludwig III.

I bought this 500ml bottle beer at Vinens Verden, Odense, Denmark. A dark weissbier with a strength of 5,5% for 3,3 Euro.

A brown unfiltered look with a slight dark orange to the bottom.

The thick head of fine bubles, slightly coulered by the dark beer, dissolves into a thin layer.

A good sweet fruit aroma, inviting.

Good CO2 that gives this beer some life compared to other dark beers, some bite to it. A delicious fruit in the after taste and some caramel tones as expected from the dark beer.

Overall rating is 82 / 100

Bryggerigården – Mørk hvede

GS6A2019

Bryggerigården was founded in 2007 and is a micro brewery located in Vejle, Denmark.

I bought this beer in a local supermarket in Denmark at 1,5 Euro for a 500 ml bottle at 5,1%.

A brown colour with a bit of orange glow to the bottom with enough light.

A big rough head settles to fine layer after a minute.

The aroma is faint fruit with a hint of caramel.

Taste comes off with a good CO2, a fruit that makes more of itself in the after taste than at first, but still a little too anonymous, not much darkness to the taste. Too watery.

Ørbæk bryggeri – KORS ØØLL

GS6A0016

Ørbæk brewery was founded in 1906 by the Madsen family but was sold off in the late 1970’s. Due to heavy competition from larger breweries the brewery kept changing hands until it closed down for good in the early 1990’s. In 1996 Niels and Nicolai Rømer bought and restored the brewery to its former glory and is today producing organic juice and beers on the original brewery equipment.

KORS ØØLL is made in cooperation with Nyborg castle museum to try and make a beer as the one drank by the Johannenite order.

I found this beer at a local supermarket in Denmark at the reasonable price of 4 Euro for a 750 ml bottle with a strength of 7,5%.

The medium dark beer fills the glass, a heavy aroma of caramel and darkness is apparent.

The head is subtle and just covers the beer.

Taste is heavy, dark, middleage like, caramel and with a flat CO2 as expected from such a beer. It really hides its 7,5% alcohol so well that it goes unnoticed. The after taste have a funny tinkling to it.

Did they succeed in brewing a beer like in the middleages, I do not know. But they succeeded in making a good beer that deserves to be tried out, especially to the price. Not to mention it is organic, a big plus in my book!
