Epic brewing company – Wit beer

GS6A2440Epic Brewing Company is located in Salt Lake City, Utah in America and was founded in 2010. All beers are hand crafted in small series and all bottles are numbered. So far 39 series of beer have been released.

I bought this beer in a local beer shop in Berlin, Germany at the price of 7,8 Euro for a 650ml bottle at 5,3%. There are only 1800 bottles of this beer and this was #18.

A beautiful unfiltered yellow colour.

Large head made of very fine bubbles and it stays with a good layer.

Aroma comes off with a lovely fruit, sweet and in balance.

Soft CO2 makes for a pleasant drink with a good fruit to it. Reminds me more of a weissbier than a wit. Still a good beer.

Schneider Weisse – Tap 7 – Unser original

GS6A2759

Georg I Schneider was the creator of the Schneider Weisse Original recipe, which is still used today. Two-hundred years ago, wheat beer could only be brewed by the Bavarian royal family in their breweries. In 1872, King Ludwig II discontinued brewing wheat beer due to a steady decline in sales.

Georg I Schneider was sold the exclusive right to brew wheat beer. Today, Georg VI Schneider is running the brewery in Kelheim, which the family acquired in 1927 and has remained the Schneider Weisse brewery to this day. It is the oldest wheat beer brewery in Bavaria. Wheat beer has been brewed there without interruption since its founding in the year 1607.

I bought this weissbier in a local supermarket in Odense, Denmark at the price of 3,5 Euro for a 500ml bottle at 5,4%.

A lovely dark orange to light brown colour of unfiltered beer fills the glass.

Large white head that settles down to a thin layer.

Delicious sweet fruit in the aroma.

Good CO2 that feels bubbly, fresh fruit with a sweetness over it and a short after taste.

I tasted this late bottled vintage 2007 port at Cálem in Porto, Portugal.

Colour is a deep purple that could go right into black.

The aroma have a weak fruit to it.

The taste is dry with a fresh fruit to it. A weak dried fruit to the after taste, no other notes to it. It needs more time on the bottle. Cálem LBV wines are semi filtered so it can age and will get better with time.

Dow – Porto Vintage 1986 Quinta do Bomfim

GS6A2621

Decanted at ten in the morning on Christmas day, the last centimetre of the bottle was residue.

Taste notes just after decanting.

A dark rose with brown notes in the colour.

A subtle fruit to the nose with a dominating alcohol.

Some tannin, very soft, very sweet and goes straight to a sweet overdose after taste of dried fruits. Seems a bit out of balance with the tannin.

Taste notes 8 hours after decanting.

The taste seems to be more in balance between tannin, hotness and sweetness than right after decanting.

Taste notes 1,5 days after decanting.

The dried fruit in the taste comes at once and the hotness takes over for a little while and a lovely long after taste of dried fruits follows.

Taste notes 2,5 days after decanting.

Aroma is no longer dominated by the alcohol but shares it evenly with the fruit.

Dried fruits, some tannin, hotness and then the dried fruits after taste, the wine does not seem to change much since 8 hours after decanting.

I tasted this 20 year old tawny port at Cálem in Porto, Portugal.

Colour is compromised of brown notes that places it just out of the red scale.

The aroma is characterized by fig and alcohol.

The taste starts out with a sharp alcohol that very fast goes into dried fruits taste that ends up with some caramel in the after taste.

Cálem – Porto Fine Ruby

GS6A1791From left to right: LBV2007, LBV1997, 20 year Tawny and Fine Ruby.

To learn more about Cálem, read my article from visiting the wine producer: Visiting Calem in Porto

I tasted this 3 to 4 year old ruby port at Cálem in Porto, Portugal.

Colour is deep red with a hint of purple to it.

The alcohol dominates the fruit in the aroma.

The taste starts out with a sharp tannin and alcohol that goes into a weak fruit and some raisin in the after taste. A cheap and reasonable wine but not much of an experience.

I bought this beer in a local beer shop in Berlin, Germany at the price of 2,75 Euro for a 500 ml bottle at 5,2%.

The colour is brown and it is unfiltered.

The head is relatively small and disappears fast.

The aroma comes off with the smoke and a hint of fruit.

The smoked malt really dominates the taste, smoke is dominating the fruit and the after taste is a gentle smoke too, the CO2 is good.

This beer really reminds me of sitting in a pub, having some beers and smoked sausages on the side, a real pleasant memory and this beer got me real hungry.
