St. Paul – White

The brewery “Brouwerij Sterkens” is located in Meer, Belgium. The brewery was founded in 1651 and is a family business through 14 generations.

I bought this beer from a wine shop in Odense, Denmark at the price of 4 Euro for a 330 ml bottle at 4,8%

Beautiful yellow and white in the colour.

Gigantic sized head with a fine foam on the top.

Powerful and balanced fruit aroma with peaks of fruited, flowery and sweet hops.

CO2 is too weak, somewhat flat in the taste and mostly a mix of hops and flowers in the taste.

Overall rating 77 / 100

Danevang – Julewit

Skanderborg Bryghus is located in Skanderborg, Denmark. This brewery was established in 2015.

I bought this beer at a local supermarket in Odense, Denmark. Price is guessed to be around 4 Euro. This biodynamic beer comes in a 500 ml glass bottle at 4.8% alcohol.

It flows thick as porridge, it very hazy and yellow in the color. Head and foam disappears fast.

Aroma is pretty anonymous. A hint of wheat, that is all.

Good CO2 level. Delicious wheaten fruit notes and full bodied taste. Thins out in the after taste, but good balance. It should have been branded as a weissbier, as it resembles that more, than a witbier.

Overall rating 77 / 100.

Svendborgsund Bryghus – Sol over sundet

I bought this 500 ml bottled wheat beer with added elderflower cordial, at 4.9% alcohol, in a wine shop in Rudkøbing, Langeland, Denmark at the price of 6 Euro.

The presentation of the beer is great. Thick hazy yellow with orange notes.

A medium sized head with a fine foam.

Fruity and elderflower in the medium strength aroma.

Powerful CO2, a sweet fruit dominates the taste. Aftertaste is a bit more mysterious with notes of dark ale.

Quinta Do Noval Silval Vintage Port 1998

The name Quinta do Noval first appeared in land registers in the year 1715.  António José da Silva, a Port shipper from Gaia, father-in-law of Luiz Valsconcelos Porto, acquired Quinta do Noval in 1894 after its devastation by phylloxera. He restored the property by replanting its vineyards.

A new bottling line and warehouse was completed in 1997 in Alijo, near to Pinhão. This project made Quinta do Noval the first of the traditional Port shippers to centralise all its activities in the Douro Valley rather than in Vila Nova de Gaia near Porto.

Taste notes right after decanting

Clear thin red in the color, brown notes, but not going into the violet spectrum. Thin curtains on the walls of the glass.

Ripe fruit in the aroma with a dominating alcohol. Some spicy notes and darkness to it.

Good balance between tannin and fruit, warm and bossy from the alcohol. Leaves a good after taste of dried fruits. Hopefully it will become more full bodied the more air it gets.

Intermediate rating 87 / 100

Taste notes 3 hours after decanting

The color is a bit darker, it has become a more deep red.

Aroma has picked up a bit on the spices, but is still dominated by alcohol.

A bit more notes of the grapes in the taste, tannins relaxing a bit more but still a tad to the thin side.

Duvel – Belgian Strong Blond

I bought this small, but powerful, Belgian Blond at the price of ? Euro, at a local wine shop in Denmark. It comes in a 330ml glass bottle at 8.5% alcohol. That certainly illustrates the STRONG!

This beer is bottle fermented.

Beautiful hazy yellow and very consistent. Great big head of foam.

Sweet fruit in the aroma and it comes off with a good strenght.

Powerful CO2, good balance in the taste between the full bodiedness, huge sweetness and slight bitterness in the after taste.

Ærø Bryggeri – Økologisk Pilsner

Ærø Bryggeri got its name in 2020, but has a long history behind it. In the small village of Rise, on the island of Ærø, the brewery have made beer from 1926 up to 1961. It was first reopened in 2004, as a new stock based cooperation.

I bought this beer from tap, on the Island Ærø, Denmark. Local beer bought where it is produced. The price was properly around 8€ for a 500ml glass at 3.9% alcohol.

Good looking yellow to orange in the color. Slightly hazy and no foam.

Fresh and light hops in the aroma.

Okay CO2 level, lots of hops and slight bitterness. The bitterness gains more power in the after taste.

Brewed like a German pils and is non pasteurized.

Overall rating 82 / 100

Lowlander – White Ale

Lowlander is a brewery located in the Netherlands. Lowlander brews with botanicals, meaning they put a large range of herbs and fruit into their brews. Founded by Frederik Kampman in around 2017 – 2018, as age of brewery is only given in years on their website, who knows?

I bought this 330 ml bottle at 5% from a wine shop in Odense, Denmark at the price of 4 Euro.

Light yellow in the colour with a white tone to it. There is a few big chunks of sediment, be careful with drinking bottoms up.

No head or very little foam.

Medium strength aroma that has a sweet and fresh fruit aroma, good balance with the hops.

Okay CO2 level, dominating wheat in the taste with notes of sweet fruit, just a slight hint of citrus and bitterness. Good balance.
